Visual Effects: A Definition

Visual Effects has become a multi-use word these days. It can mean anything from Digital effects, like the waterworm effect from The Abyss. Or it can be camera effects, like David Bowman's final journey in 2001 A Space Odyssey. It can even mean pyrotechnics explosions.

In our case at M5, what we build is practical, physical effects, props and rigs. This encompasses the sculpting, casting, machining, and painting of various props, characters, and sets. Much of our expertise has centered on the area of stop motion animation; both sets and armatures. Often we also do design and mechanical fabrication as well. We've built 6 inch high flying fairy toy prototypes, 19 foot long spaceships and just about everything in between. We've constructed mechanical prototypes for Toy companies, as well as costumes for miniature characters in films. In short, if it's 3 dimensional, not only can we build it, but one of us probably already has at some point.
